You’ve had the inspection done, you’ve seen the footage, and pipe relining has been recommended. Now what? For most homeowners, this is new territory — the process isn’t widely understood, and that uncertainty can make it harder to feel confident about proceeding.
This is a straightforward walkthrough of what actually happens during a pipe relining job, how long it takes, what disruption to expect, and how to know the work has been done properly.
Step One: The Assessment
Good relining work starts before anything is inserted into a pipe. A CCTV inspection camera is run through the drain to document the location and extent of the damage, confirm the pipe diameter, check the alignment, and identify any access constraints. You should receive a clear explanation of what the footage shows.
This step matters more than it might seem. The liner needs to be cut to the correct length and diameter. If the assessment is rushed or skipped, problems emerge during installation — or worse, after it.
Step Two: Clearing the Pipe
The existing pipe needs to be as clean as possible before the liner goes in. This typically involves high-pressure water jetting, which clears root intrusion, built-up scale, grease, and debris from the interior walls. If root mass is significant, a root cutter may be used first.
This step is non-negotiable. A liner bonded over debris or residual root matter won’t cure correctly against the pipe wall, creating weak spots and potential failure points. If a contractor is moving quickly past this stage, ask why.
Step Three: Preparing and Installing the Liner
The liner itself is a felt or fibreglass tube that has been cut to the required length and saturated with a two-part epoxy resin. It’s prepared off-site or in a van — the resin has a working time before it begins to cure, so timing matters.
The saturated liner is inverted and pushed (or sometimes pulled) through the pipe using air pressure or a calibration tube. As it moves through, it turns inside out, pressing the resin-saturated material against the pipe wall. Once it’s in the correct position — verified by camera — an inflation bladder holds it firmly against the host pipe while curing takes place.
Step Four: Curing
Curing time depends on the resin system used and the ambient temperature. Ambient-cure resins typically take several hours. Some operators use UV-cured or hot-water-cured systems that can significantly reduce this time.
During curing, the pipe can’t be used — water can’t pass through it. For a household drain, this generally means the relevant fixtures are out of use for the curing period. Your plumber should give you a clear timeframe at the start of the job and let you know when it’s safe to use the system again.
Step Five: Post-Installation Inspection
Once the liner has cured and the bladder has been removed, a final CCTV inspection is carried out. This confirms:
- The liner has bonded evenly to the pipe wall with no voids or bubbles
- The internal diameter is correct and consistent
- Any junctions (side connections from other drains) have been reinstated correctly — a step that requires a robotic cutter and matters significantly for overall drainage function
- The liner terminates correctly at both ends
Ask for this footage. A competent operator will have it ready as a matter of course. If no post-installation inspection is offered, that’s a problem.
How Much Disruption Should You Expect?
Genuinely: very little. For a straightforward relining job with existing access points, there’s no excavation, no breaking of concrete or tiles, and no structural work. The plumbers work from the surface — from inspection points, cleanouts, or existing access openings.
Typical jobs are completed in a single day. The main constraint on your household is the period when the relevant drain can’t be used during curing. For a single-section repair, this might be three to four hours. For a full main drain relining, plan for a full day.
What Does a Good Warranty Look Like?
Reputable relining contractors typically offer product warranties of 25–50 years on the liner material and workmanship warranties of at least 10 years on the installation. Ask specifically what the warranty covers — whether it includes post-installation CCTV, what the process is for a warranty claim, and who stands behind it.
Be cautious of vague verbal assurances. A warranty that isn’t in writing isn’t worth much.
One Final Note on Price
Pipe relining quotes vary considerably between operators. The variance is mostly explained by equipment quality, resin specification, liner thickness, and whether a proper post-installation inspection is included. A very low quote usually means something is being skipped — most commonly either the pipe preparation or the final inspection.
The liner is the long-term investment. The process that installs it correctly is what you’re actually paying for.
